Hypercolor extreme colored gel shots are simply some of my favorite types of shoots to do in-studio. To really make colors pop and enhance vibrancy, some simple pre-planning before the shoot can make the difference between good and great. For this shoot, I worked with the amazing and talented Dianna (@its_dsl) in-frame for this series. Her wardrobe was a shiny silver-like material that was not only reflective, but it gave off a near metallic appearance. That material not only fit the theme of the shoot, but her posing and positioning really allowed the colored gels to pop off of both the material and her skin, to transform these colored gel shots into a striking series.
For the lighting, this was a five light setup, with colored gels applied to each strobe. The key light was a teal-gelled strobe, along with three kicker lights all with pink colored gels added. Finally, there was a background light with a purple colored gel applied. What is also great about colored gels is that a simple swap out of the gels can absolutely transform the look of the entire series, while maintaining the same lighting setup. For example, as you can see in some of the shots, I swapped out the pink gels with orange, and turned off the background strobe to have an entirely different vivid teal/orange color combination with minimal effort.
For the background, I used the Plum seamless paper from Savage Universal, with the model standing approximately eight feet from the background. I added a light to the background with a purple-gel applied to the strobe, which allowed flexibility in brightening the backdrop at any time. As you can see in some of the shots, the background is nearly black, and this was easily achieved just by turning down, or in some cases, just turning off off the background strobe entirely.
To add even more punch to this hypercolor photography series, I incorporated some pink tulle material to really catch the pink kicker lights and enhance the way the light catches the model. As noted above, after a wardrobe change, and a swap out of the colored gels, I flipped off the background light, and this same lighting setup became a teal/orange color combination with the following results:
